Prehistoric Age~
Three Hans Period

Prehistoric Age

  • Paleolithic remains dating back from the 10th Century BC to tens of thousands of years ago were found in Seokjang-ri, Gongju. This indicates that human history in Chungcheongnam-do started from the Paleolithic Age.

Three Hans Period

  • It is estimated that about fifteen states, including Mokji state (Jiksan, Cheonan) among the 54 states of Mahan were distributed in the Chungcheongnam-do region.

  • The capital of Baekje was moved from Hanseong (Seoul) to Wungjin (Gongju) in the first year of King Munju’s reign.

578

  • The capital of Baekje was moved from Wungjin (Gongju) to Sabi (Buyeo) in the 16th year of King Seong’s reign.

660

  • Baekje was collapsed by the Silla and Tang Allied Forces in the 20th year of King Uija’s reign and Wungjin Commandery was established.

671

  • Reorganized as Soburiju (Sabiju) in the 11th year of King Munmu’s reign.

686

  • Renamed Wungcheonju in the 6th year of King Sinmun’s reign.

757

  • Renamed as Wungju in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign. Later Three States Period Included in the region of the Later Baekje established by Gyeonhwon

983

  • Gongjumok was established by the 12-Mok System in the 3rd year of King Seongjong’s reign after Goryeo unified the Later Three States.

1106

  • Yanggwangchungchenogju-do was established by combining three provinces, Gwannae-do, Chungwon-do and Hanam-do, among ten provinces.

1171

  • Yanggwangju-do and Chungcheongju-do were divided.

1314

  • Chungcheongju-do was merged into Yanggwang-do again.

1356

  • Renamed Chungcheong-do in the 6th year of King Gongmin’s reign (It is estimated that Yanggwangchungcheongju-do was called both Yanggwang-do and Chungcheong-do for short at the end of the Goryeo period)

Joseon Period

1396

  • Yanggwang-do was divided into two provinces, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do.

1505

  • Chungcheong-do was renamed Chunggong-do.

1550

  • Chunggong-do was renamed Cheonghong-do (since then, Chungcheong-do was renamed as Gongcheong-do, Chungcheong-do, Gonghong-do, Cheonghong-do and Gongchung-do).

1834

  • Gongchung-do was renamed Chungcheong-do again.

Aug. 4, 1896

  • Eight Guns were divided into 13 Guns (Chungnam was established).

1930~1940s

Oct. 1, 1932

  • The provincial office was moved from Gongju to Daejeon.

Oct. 1, 1938

  • Nonsan-myeon of Nonsan-gun and Janghang-myeon of Seocheon-gun were promoted to Eup (1 Bu, 14 Guns, 6 Eups and 167 Myeons).

Nov. 1, 1940

  • Yesan-myeon of Yesan-gun was promoted to Eup (1 Bu, 14 Guns, 7 Eups, 165 Myeons)

Oct. 1, 1941

  • Onyang-myeon of Asan-gun and Hongseong-myeon of Hongseong-gun were promoted to Eup (1 Bu, 14 Guns, 9 Eups, 163 Myeons).

1960~1970s

Jan. 1, 1960

  • Buyeo-myeon of Buyeo-gun was promoted to Eup (1 City, 14 Guns, 12 Eups, 16 Myeons)

Jan. 1, 1963

  • Geumsan-gun of Jeollabuk-do was incorporated into Chungnam. Yeonmu-myeon of Nonsan-gun was promoted to Eup. Cheonan-eup was promoted to a city (2 Cities, 15 Guns, 15 Eups, 164 Myeons)

Jul. 1, 1973

  • Sapgyo-myeon of Yesan-gun, Hapdeok-myeon of Dangjin-gun, Taean-myeon of Seosan-gun and Seonghwan-myeon of Cheonwon-gun were promoted to Eup.

May 1, 1979

  • Seocheon-myeon of Seocheon-gun and Cheongyang-myeon of Cheongyang-gun were promoted to Eup (2 Cities, 2 Gus, 15 Guns, 23 Eups, 156 Myeons).

1980~1990s

Dec. 1, 1980

  • Anmyeon-myeon of Seosan-gun was promoted to Eup (2 Cities, 2 Gus, 15 Guns, 24 Eups, 155 Myeons)

Feb. 15, 1983

  • The border lines of 15 Eups and Myeons were adjusted (2 Cities, 2 Gus, 15 Guns, 23 Eups, 154 Myeons)

Oct. 1, 1985

  • Seonggeo-myeon of Cheonan-gun was promoted to Eup (2 Cities, 2 Gus, 15 Guns, 24 Eups, 153 Myeons)

Jan. 1, 1986

  • Gongju, Daecheon and Onyang-eup were promoted to cities.

Jan. 1, 1989

  • Daejeon-si and Daedeok-gun were promoted to Daejeon directly controlled city. Seosan-eup was promoted to the city and separated from Seosan-gun.

Feb. 1, 1990

  • Gyeryong branch of Chungcheongnam-do was established.

Jan. 1, 1995

  • Eight cities and provinces, Gongju-si, Gongju-gun, Daecheon-si, Boryeong-gun, Onyang-si, Asan-gun, Seosan-si and Seosan-gun, were integrated into four cities (5 Cities, 11 Guns).

May 10, 1995

  • Cheonan-si and Cheonan-gun were integrated into Cheonan-si (5 Cities, 10 Guns)

Mar. 1, 1996

  • Nonsan-gun was promoted to Nonsan-si (6 Cities, 9 Guns, 22 Eups, 147 Mhyeons, 37 Dongs)

2000~Present

Sep. 19, 2003

  • Gyeryong Branch was promoted to Gyeryong-si (2 Myeons, 1 Dong)

Mar. 18, 2005

  • Special Act on Administrative City Construction was promulgated (around Nam-myeon, Geumnam-myeon and Dong-myeon in Yeongi-gun and Janggi-myeon and Banpo-myeon in Gongju-si).

Feb. 12, 2006

  • The site for movement of the provincial office was determined (around Sapgyo-eup, Yesan-gun and Hongbuk-myeon, Hongseong-gun).

Jan. 1, 2012

  • Dangjin-gun was promoted to Dangjin-si (2 Eups, 9 Myeons, 3 Dongs)

Jul. 1, 2012

  • Yeongi-gun and Janggi-myeon, Uidang-myeon and Banpo-myeon of Gongju-si were separated and promoted to Sejong Special Self-Governing City.

Jan. 2, 2013

  • The provincial office was moved from Daejeon to Naepo New City.
