▲ Muchangpo's mystical sea
Muchangpo's mystical sea route, which is known as the “Miracle of Moses,” appears once a day in the morning between November 12 and 15; visitors can walk along the 1.5km long path, starting from Muchangpo Beach to Seokdaedo Island, when the path appears.
Opened for the first time along the West Sea in 1928, Muchangpo Beach is 1.5km long, 1-2m deep, and 50m wide with a slow slope. Thus, it is perfect for children and adults to enjoy swimming in the sea. It also provides beautiful scenery, being surrounded by a pine forest as well as enchanting rocks.
The opening hours of the sea-parting are as follows: ▲ From 9:16 am to 10:43 am on Nov. 12 (tide level: 67cm) ▲ From 9:44 am to 11:18 am on Nov. 13 (tide level: 62cm) ▲From 10:19 am to 11:48 am on Nov. 14 (tide level: 65cm) ▲ From 11:02 am to 12:12 pm on Nov. 15 (tide level: 76cm). Visitors should arrive one hour before to enjoy the route fully.
The mysterious sea-parting appears when the tide level is 70cm or lower.
Around the sea route, various things and experiences are offered such as torchlight fishing experience, torchlight march along the mystical sea route, bare hand fishing experience, fishing on a deck boat, and clam chucking.
Along the sea route, visitors can have a special experience of catching seafood produce such as sea cucumber, conch, clam, and crab. They can also have a paid clam catching experience at a clam experience venue near the sea route.
To have a mudflat experience, participants need to have small tools such as hoe and hook as well as a container to harvest. It is also essential to wear comfortable mud-resistant outfit.
The mysterious sea-parting is a natural phenomenon that opens up a sea path in an “S”-shaped curve between Muchangpo Beach and Seokdaedo Island due to the difference between the rise and fall of the tide.
The sea-parting occurs depending on the distance and location change between the moon and Earth, but it usually appears during daytime in spring, autumn, and winter and during evening in summer.
